Handmade for Cats

外苑前のギャラリーmanaさんで開催された、

イラストレーター **上路ナオ子**さんの個展を観に行ってきました。

個展のタイトルは「ゆくりなくも」。

「偶然に」「思いがけず」といった意味を持つ言葉だそうです。

彼女の作品で私がいちばん惹かれるのは、

豊かな色彩です。

写真が下手で

良さが伝わなそうですが、

山の尾根や谷が

色彩豊かに表現されています。

そこにそっと配置される生き物たち。

決して主張しすぎることなく、

でも確かに「そこに生きている」存在として描かれていて、

自然や生き物への深い愛情が伝わってきます。

今回の個展タイトルと同名の作品「ゆくりなくも」。

女の子と鳥が向き合うその絵は、強いストーリー性を感じさせます。

ふたりは何を話しているんだろう、とつい想像してしまう。

人間と鳥が、同じ目線で対峙しているところがとても印象的で、

もしかしたら「教えている」のは人間ではなく、

鳥の方なのかもしれない、

そんなふうにも感じました。

人間の視点だけで、すべてを語ってはいけない—

そんなメッセージ感じます。

別の作品では、男性がニワトリを相棒のように抱えています。

ニワトリ、というモチーフの選び方がとても彼女らしくて、

このユニークさが本当にいい。

肩の力が抜けていて、でも芯がある。

タイトルを失念してしまったのですが、

山を「ピンク」で描いた作品も忘れられません。

山をピンクで描ける感性って、なかなか出会えないと思います。

色は、感性に直接訴えかけるもの。

だから私にとって、絵の中でとても大切な要素です。

彼女のセンスのいい

色彩感覚と

自然と生き物に対する愛が

作品に表現されていて

本当に共感できる

作品の数々でした。

I visited a solo exhibition by illustrator 上路ナオ子, held at Gallery mana in Gaienmae.

The title of the exhibition, “Yukurina Kumo,” means something like “by chance” or “unexpectedly.”

What draws me most to her work is her sense of color.
Even though my photos don’t fully capture it, the ridges and valleys of the mountains are rendered with rich, layered hues.

Quietly placed within these landscapes are living creatures.
They never feel overstated, yet they are unmistakably alive.
Through them, you can sense her deep affection for nature and for living beings.

One of the works shares the same title as the exhibition, “Yukurina Kumo.”
A girl and a bird face each other in the painting, and it feels filled with story.
I found myself wondering what kind of conversation they might be having.

What struck me most was that the girl and the bird stand at the same eye level.
Perhaps it is not the human who is teaching, but the bird.
The work gently suggests that we should not try to explain everything solely from a human perspective.

In another piece, a man holds a chicken as if it were his companion.
The choice of a chicken as a motif feels uniquely hers—
humorous, relaxed, yet quietly strong at its core.

There was also a painting of a mountain rendered in pink, a color choice I won’t forget.
It takes a rare sensitivity to paint a mountain that way.

Color speaks directly to our senses.
That is why it is such an essential element in painting for me.
Her refined sense of color, along with her love for nature and living creatures, is vividly present throughout her work.

It was a truly wonderful exhibition.
